Over the years, I have developed a quick and easy way to describe what naturopathic doctors do. Simply put, a Naturopathic Doctor is like a General Practitioner for Alternative Medicine; we have extensive scientific training in the foundations of clinical medicine, but instead of using pharmaceutical drugs, we utilize a combination of therapies that are personalized and specific to the structural, biochemical and even emotional requirements of our patients. These therapies may include acupuncture, botanical medicine, homeopathy, physical medicine or diet and nutritional counseling.
Furthermore, a large part of the mandate of naturopathic medicine is its emphasis on preventative healthcare. Naturopathic doctors are extensively trained in identifying risk factors for chronic disease and providing the practical tools to overcome genetic and environmental determinants of health.
We are standing on the brink of a paradigm shift in health, medicine and the way in which we as a society view wellness. Naturopathic doctors are at the forefront of this shift. I have always believed strongly that disease cannot be viewed solely from a symptomatic standpoint. The interconnection of the mind, body and spirit places disease in the greater social context in which individuals suffering, find themselves. This is the understanding that I strive to impart to my patients, and it is what motivates me to understand and espouse holistic health.
